Led by the Embassy Protection Collective, activists from across the country gathered outside the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, D.C. to protest efforts by representatives of right-wing coup leader Juan Guaido to seize the building. While the coup supporters are counting on the support of U.S. authorities, it is in fact the protesters who are defending international -- and even D.C.! -- law. The Vienna Convention, which establishes norms for the treatment of diplomatic buildings, prohibits host nations from violating diplomatic property even when relations between two countries break down, and local law establishes a formal process (which of course has not been followed) to evict tenants from a building.
