Permit obtained for September 2 demonstration

Today's huge demonstration in New York City revealed the depth of opposition both to Bush's criminal war in Iraq and its reactionary assault on civil rights and civil liberties at home. The Mayor and the police worked to stifle and limit dissent by restricting free speech rights and by creating a climate of fear and intimidation. They were assuming that people would capitulate without a struggle.

In the last few weeks in New York City, however, the opposite happened. People got mad, they spoke out, a political and legal challenge was undertaken. The political climate changed dramatically. Four days ago the Daily News reported that 71% of New Yorkers agreed that the demonstrators should have the right to have a permit in Central Park.

Now the police and government are once again trying to minimize the demonstration by using a ridiculously low crowd estimate. That’s par for the course.

In the next few days there will be constant mobilizations in New York City.

Forty thousand leaflets were distributed announcing the A.N.S.W.E.R. demonstration on Thursday, September 2 at Madison Square Garden. The demonstration on Thursday, September 2 is the one event that will take place outside the Convention Hall at the very moment that Bush will be accepting the nomination. A permit has been obtained for this demonstration. If people live in the New York area they should tell friends and family that the September 2 demonstration begins at 7pm at 31st and 8th Ave. This demonstration demands Bring the Troops Home Now!, U.S. Out of Iraq!, End Colonial Occupation of Iraq, Haiti, Palestine & Everywhere!

The energy and momentum in New York is impressive. Great thanks go to all the A.N.S.W.E.R. volunteers who are working night and day doing outreach, getting out leaflets and placards, organizing transportation and all the myriad activities that are necessary to bring this important anti-war message out into the streets. While Bush may have thought that picking New York would provide a good photo-op backdrop for his nomination, this decision has become yet one more political miscalculation.

We urgently need your financial help right now to carry out this work in this week, and to be sure that a principled message against war and occupation in Iraq, Palestine, Haiti and everywhere, and in support of social justice here at home, is heard loud and clear not only by the Bush administration, but by the world media. Please support this work today and help make the September 2nd demonstration - which is taking place while Bush is actually inside the Convention Hall a powerful showing of opposition. Funds are needed now. If you would like to help by making a much needed financial contribution you can do so by making an online donation using the secure server by clicking here.
