Emergency Rallies: Defend the Correa Government in Ecuador!

Rallies are happening around the country today – Thursday, September 30 – to defend the progressive, democratically-elected government of Rafael Correa and denounce the right-wing coup attempt.

Right now (Thur, Sept. 30 at 5pmET), national police, military units and other right-wing forces are rioting in Ecuador. President Correa himself said, “This is a coup attempt.” Workers and Correa supporters are also out demonstrating, but they are defending the government and denouncing the right-wing police provocations.

Correa's government has long been in the crosshairs of the U.S.-backed right wing in Ecuador. Correa is an ally of Venezuela and Cuba, and Ecuador is a member of the ALBA trade alliance. Three years ago, Correa refused to renew the lease of U.S. military bases in Ecuador.

With the right-wing coup in Honduras fresh in our minds, progressives in the United States must be vigilant and intervene in the struggle. We cannot wait for U.S. imperialism and its right-wing allies and proxies to carry out another bloody coup.

The people united can stop the coup! All out to defend the Correa government!
